February Top Tips

This month our therapist, Mandy, shares her favourite beauty tips for protecting your skin this winter.

Our faces and hands bear the brunt of the winter; cold air outdoors, hot and dry air indoors all takes it's toll leaving us with dehydrated, often chapped skin. Mandy recommends using plenty of moisturiser and lip balm containing sunscreen. Moisturise the face and hands regularly, especially before venturing out, and wear gloves! And, of course, keep well hydrated.

How to prevent your skin from drying out

  • Oil the inside if you are lacking in Omega 3, 6 this can cause your skin to dry out.
  • Not drinking enough water as our skins are 70 % water and if we are dehydrated it will show on our skins.
  • Exfoliate the old dead skin. Use an AHA with a body mitt to exfoliate the body skin, use a gentle muslin exfoliating cloth for the face. (Do not scrub or over exfoliate the face skin it is too harsh).
  • Hydrate the new skin - with a body cream.
  • Beware of overheating i.e. hot bath sitting in front of fires they will dry you out more.
  • Hands and feet you can scrub your hands and feet and apply a nourishing foot or hand cream, wearing cotton socks can help to hold on to the moisture
  • Lips, be aware of certain lip balms, as with over use you can actually over-dry the lips.

Clare's Top Beauty Tips

At this time of year there are many different factors that can affect our health and the appearance of our skin. Here are some simple treatments you can do at home to help keep your skin in tip-top condition.

Dry Skin Brushing

It is known that the skin is the largest organ in the body, and is responsible for one-fourth of the body's detoxification each day, also making it one of the most important elimination organs! The skin is also known as the ‘third’ kidneys and the lungs are known as the ‘second’ kidneys.

When you do Skin Brushing, you help your lymphatic system to clean itself. You use a simple technique to improve the surface circulation on the skin, encouraging your body's discharge of metabolic wastes, resulting in an improved ability to combat bacteria, plus helping your skin to look and feel healthier.

How To Do Skin Brushing:

  • Buy a natural, NOT synthetic, bristle brush, since it does not scratch the surface of your skin.
  • Skin Brush before showering or bathing, at least ONCE per day, and TWICE, if possible.
  • Do NOT wet your skin, since it will NOT have the same effect and could cause scratching to the skin.
  • Do lighter strokes over and around sensitive areas.  Brush each part of your body several times and follow with the stroke of your hand, completely brushing your whole body.
  • Brush the soles of your feet first then brush your ankles, calves, and thighs.   Follow this by brushing your stomach in a clockwise direction, and lastly brush your hands to your arms.
  • ALWAYS skin brush towards the heart.
  • Take a WARM bath or shower, which can be followed by a COOL rinse at the end to get the blood going and encourage surface warmth.
  • Wash your brush every few weeks in mild soapy water and allow it dry.

Here is Clare's detoxifying drink to maintain a healthy glow over winter:
